Apr. 10, 1953 - Reg Bungay, the driver of a tanker full of fuel, sacrificed his life in order to save others. He was driving the tanker in the town of Lambourn through the English countryside of Berkshire when he noticed that the brakes on the tanker had stopped functioning. But instead of hopping out of the tractor and saving his own life, he stayed behind the wheel and turned on his warning signal. The residents of Lambourn were warned to safety as he navigated the tanker through the narrow streets at increasing speeds. Eventually he lost control and the tanker exploded into six houses, sending them up in flames, making 14 families homeless. No one was seriously injured however.
