Jan. 01, 1954 - London's Atom Fortress is ready Vital Centre prepares for emergency - in Southwark.: The new Atomb Bomb proof fortress - one of 100 atomic C.D. headquarters in London is now ready for use in Southwark. At least a thousands tons of earth had to be moved for the construction of the centre. A diesel generator pumps filtered air into an operations room and provides emergency heat and light. Nothing should budge the control centre which has an area below ground level of over 2, 000 square feet with its own telephone exchange, mess facilities; toilets and rest rooms for weary rescue teams. The fortress has been equipped with a recreation centre. In charge is Mr. Hugh Pierce who has moved into new prefab offices and training centre built on top the underground centre - and in case of emergency the teams move below to continue emergency operations unhampered.
