Sep. 09, 1955 - ATOMIC WARFARE DOES NOT OUTDATE SHOVELS: Soldiers past and present will be sorry to note that although twelve Dinkums, new lightweight hydraulically-operated diggers, were used in a recent atomic warfare exercise of Britain's Territorial Army, shovels were also in evidence. But the Dinkums, each capable of shifting five cubic yards of earth an hour, did make possible the digging of a hole for an underground brigade headquarters in 1 1/2 hours. Into the hole end-on-end went two iron tubes 7 ft. 6 ins. in diameter. A topping of an 18-inch layer of sandbags completed the job.
