Feb. 16, 1956 - Bank Rate raised to 5 1/2 percent: The Bank Rate went up today from 4 1/2 to 5/12 percent the first change for nearly a year. Not since the critical days of 1931, when Britain went off the Gold standard, have we had such a high Bank Rate.
