Nov. 11, 1955 - He Fell Through The Sound Barrier - And Lived. Most Amazing Air Escape On Record': Flying Officer Hedly Mulland (22) recently became the first man to bale out on the other side of the sound barrier and survive. His feat has astounded aviation specialists - for they thought he would have been killed instantly - with every bone broken. He was flying in a Hunter at 30, 000 feet - and found that he could not pull the machine out of her dive - and he was flying around 700 m.p.h. - he ejected himself from the aircraft - the slipstream tore off a shoe and sock - wrist watch helmet and oxygen mask - and he lost consciousness. He came round 30 seconds later - the chute opened and he lands in the sea close to a tug towing a target for the shore batteries. He was picked up. Experts say that he had the most fantastic escape from an air wreck ever recorded'. He finished up with two black eyes; a broken arm; and a bone in his pelvis broken. Photo shows Flying Officer Hedley Molland puts the finishing touches to the model of a Swift plane he is making during his convalescence - after his amazing escape
