Jun. 06, 1956 - Royal Navy submarine Sidon sank in Portland harbor today after a practice torpedo had blown up in the forward compartment. At the time of the explosion, the submarine was berthed alongside her depot ship Maidstone'. An Admiralty statement said today: We must abandon any hope of saving any occupants of the submarine'.
