1957 - New Sub Is Just A Target: A British experimental high-speed submarine, the 780-ton H.M.S. Explorer, will be used as a target to teach surface forces how to destroy rapid- moving subs. Explorer's other task will be to provide experience in the operation of her new type of propulsion - turbines supplied with steam and carbon dioxide. She is able to develop full power when completely submerged and is independent full power when completely submerged and is independent of atmosphere oxygen. Photo shows H.M.S.
