Jan. 01, 1956 - MERCHANT SEAMEN TAKE TO MINING The National Coal Board have recruited coming miners from among dissatisfied merchant seamen at Liverpool. The men, who total about 60 from Liverpool and Merseyside, started their training this week at the Sandhole Training Centre, Walkden. They are brought to the centre by bus in the morning and taken back in the afternoon. During this week they get film shows and instruction on safety.
