Oct. 10, 1957 - Brighton Police Chief Is Granted Bail But He Must Remain In His Home: Charles Ridge, suspended Chief Constable of Brighton, left a cell in Lowes jail yesterday to become a prisoner in his own home, He was bailed out by his daughter, Mrs. Betty Whiffen, 31-year-old children's officer. A few hours earlier an application for Mr. Ridge's release on500 bail was granted by Mr. Justine Diplock, sitting in the Chambers in the High Court. The judge made three conditions; (1) Mr. Ridge must go straight home with his solicitor, Mr. John Bosley, (2) His telephone number which has been disconnected must not be restored to use. (3). He must remain at home until next Friday. That is the day for the resumed hearing of a conspiracy charge against him. Accused with-him-are Detective-Inspector John Hammersley, Detective-Sargeant Trevor Heath, and a Brighton license, Anthony John Lyons.
