Sep. 09, 1958 - Scimitar Aircraft crashes into sea when landing on aircraft carrier.: One of the Navy's new twin-engined Scimitar aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm, crashed into the sea this afternoon, when landing on the aircraft carrier H.M.S. Victorious at Portsmouth. The aircraft sank with the pilot, CDR. J.D. Russell still in it. Photo shows A helicopter patrolling by the side of the carrier of the fly-on lowered a man on a winch in a vain attempt to free the pilot, Commander Russel from the sinking aircraft
