Feb. 25 Our Ambassador to the U.S.A. enjoys a list weekend at Home: Before setting sail for the States, and the Washington Embassy which he is taking over from Sir Oliver Franks, Sir Roger Makins enjoyed a weekend at Sherefield Court with his large family. Only the twin 17-year-old daughters, Hollie, Cynthia are remaining for school. 20 months old symbolically named Dwight is going. Sir Roger is a career diplomat, was born in 1904, went to Winchester and Christ Church, Oxrford, was called to the Bar before entering the Foreign Office. This is his third time in Washington. He started there as a 3rd Secretary in 1931 after other minor posts in Europe. He was last there in 45 as Minister. He was at Afho, 43-'44, cam back to the F. Office and is now Dep. Under Secy.
