Feb. 28 Every year the City of London elects it's Chief Citizen, the Lord May of London has been an honoured title since 1192. On November 8th the 647th Lord Mayor (Some L.M.'s held office for more than 1 year) Sir Henry Murray Fox, took up office, and the following day the occasion was celebrated with the Traditional pagaentry of the Lord Mayor's show, a colourfull procession which winds through the streets of London, and introduces the Mayor to his citizens. The ancient title - Mayor, originated in the days when the Trade Guilds of the City were responsible for the general running of the City, and held so much power that they even affected affairs of state. The Mayor is elected from the City Aldermen, by over 15, 000 liverymen (affiliated to Livery companies, or the Old City Guilds), he then becomes head of the City Corporation, resides at the Head of the Court of Common Council of the City, is Chief Magistrate of the City, and lives at the Mansion House in the City. Diuring his term of office, which confers the status of Knighthood automatically, he is the City's official host to all visitors, and makes over 800 speeches a year. SHOWN is the Lord Mayor and his wife the Lady Mayoress together with their supporting dignitaries and staff, in the Salon of the Mansion House, just before the Lord Mayor's Banquet, after the Lord Mayor's Show, Sir Murray Fox, has a home in the County, and has 3 children, Alison, Peter and Christine.
