Mar. 03, 1961 - South Africa Withdraws From The Commonwealth: In a communique issued at Lancaster House after yesterday's session of the Commonwealth Premier's Conference, it was stated that Dr. Verwoerd, South Africa's Premier, withdrew his application to remain a member of the British Commonwealth. South Africa will out herself off from Britain and the eleven other nations on May 31st - the day the country becomes a republic.
