Aug. 08, 1962 - Plastic Tower Bridge: Replacement of the waterlogged timbers supporting the carriageways of Tower Bridge, London has begun. The scheme, involving a filling of polyurethane, a lightweight plastic, will cost £87, 800. The filling will be finished with resin-covered wooden blocks. It has the same strength as highqualty timber but is mouch lighter and has a lower water abosorption rate. Traffic will be prohibited to 12 week-ends.
