Feb. 02, 1963 - London - As Seen By Nelson - From His Column. The Sword - On Guad': Steeplejack Bill Larkin (57) took a camera with him when he climbed to the top of the famous Nelson Column in London's Trafalgar Square today - to get a few views of the city - from the lofty perch. The statue is having its periodical wash-and-brush-up, the first since 1955. Mr. Larkin's steeplejack family has carried out the cleaning task since 1905. The statue is 18ft. high - standing on top of the 145ft. column. The column itself is never cleaned as the grime form a protective coating. Only the statue which is made of Bronze is cleaned. It is estimated that there is as much as eight Cwt. of bird-lime accumulated on the statue.
