Feb. 02, 1966 - British troops for Arctic Norway.: Nearly 1000 troops of Britain's Strategie reserve are to take part in a large scale NATO exercise in the Tromso area of Arctic Norway, code named Winter Express the manoeuvers are being planned by ACE (Allied Command Europe) to practise the defens of NATO's Northern Flak under winter conditions. The exercise will test the combat readiness of the International Allied Mobile Forces (land)- NATO's fire brigade'. And apart from the British contingent several thousand troops from other NATO countries including Norway, USA, Italy, and Canada will take part. The somerset and cornwall light infantry (stationed at Gravesend, will from the nucleaus of the British contingent. For the British troops the exercise will be in two distinct phases. The first a period of intensive training in arctic survival, tactical movement over snow and the operation of equipment and weapons under extreme weather conditions. This will followed by the exercise proper when the Allied Mobile Forces will commence ten days of concentrated manoeuvres against a controlled enemy'. The exercise will end on March 20th. This is the first time a NATO exercise of this scale involving British troops has taken place in the Arctic during the winter period.
