Nov. 11, 1964 - Sparrers can't sing on Dr. Beeching's roof Railway Porters become part-time bird scarers: Porter Frank Saunders and two of his colleagues are saving British Railways a lot of money. Each evening they take on the task of part-time bird scarers on the roof of British Railway's Temple meads Station - Bristol - for which they receive a small bunos. It appears that the hundreds of sparrows and pigeons nesting on the roof - fouled the slates - windows and platforms. Specialists in bird control wanted a large sum of money to get rid of them - so Frank and his colleagues now do the job each evening - saving British Railways a lot of money.
