Nov. 11, 1965 - Egg Timer at the Telephone Exchange. At the new Telephone Exchange at Aldershot, in Hampshire, they have found a use for the egg timer. When a call comes through to directory inquiries, the operator set the timer working. The sands of time run out after 90 seconds. If the answer has not been found by then the operator tells the caller she will ring back latter. Ms. Edward Mayne, the telephone manager for the area says: It may sound old fashioned but the egg timer were the idea of the local exchange and we don't want to stifle local ideas. Nothing is done in an arbitrary way. The operator will continue the search and ring the caller back.
