Jun. 06, 1966 - Alfie arrives in Downing Street after his 50 mile ride from Basingstoke to Lodge Petition: Stable owner Alfie Cole, of Basingstoke, set out yesterday morning in his pony and trap for a 50 mile ride to No.10 Downing Street to lodge a protest to the Prime Minister despite a message that Mr. Wilson would not grant him an interviewer. He arrived there today with a petition backing the fight against the compulsory purchase order placed on his 10-acre holding by Basingstoke Council. It has 1, 000 signatures. Mr. Cole has been offered £10, 000 compensation, but he claims the land is worth £120, 000.
