May 05, 1967 - The biggest telescope in Western Europe: The finishing touches are being put to the giant telescope, named Sir Asaas Newton at the Royal Greenwich Observatory at Hurstmonceaux, Sussex. It is the biggest telescope in Western Europe - it's moving parts weigh 87 tons. The telescope's mirror a disc of glass 8ft 2inc. wide will collect light from stars and galaxies millions of miles out in Space and focus it on to photographic plates.
