May 05, 1966 - Air crash inquiry/: The last 18 seconds before an airliner crashed at London Airport killing 36 people on board were relived before a court of inquiry yesterday. Evidence came, not from anyone who was on the aircraft, but from a charred magie box flight recorder taken from the crash wreckage. It recorded flight data from the BEA Vanguard which crashed on a fog-covered runway at London Airport last October. Crown QC Mr. Desmond Ackener told the Minsitry of Aviation Inquiry in London that the plane overshoot the runway twice because of fog. A second-by-second picture by the flight data recorder, which was on board the aircraft.To magic box which relays its information in graph form, stood and on a table at the inquiry in front of a model of a Vanguard, It was the first time that information from a flight recorder had been used at a British inquiry. Mr. Ackenr said the recorder showed that the aircraft began to overshoot for the second time 18 seconds before the crash. He went on: The critical phase in the flight path, where the aircraft changed its attitude from climbing to descending, came from eight seconds down to the impact. Air speed had been increasing since 11 seconds before the accident and went on increasing down to five seconds. Some appreciated, but but appreciated too late, what was happening because a second or so before the actual impact a desperate but unsuccessful attempt was made to reverse the whole process and a very strung pull was made to bring the nose up.
