May 05, 1968 - Speaker Bans Dame Irene Ward: Dame Irene Ward, 72-year old Tory M P for Tynemouth, was suspended yesterday from the House of Commons, after she had staged a one-woman protest against what she called dictatorship'. By this she presumably meant the Government's handling of business in the Commons, a matter about which both Tory and Labour M P's had been complaining earlier. Standing in front of the Mace, she first tried to block the path of tellers announcing a division result. She then started to address a protest to the Speaker. After she refused to return to her place, the Speaker named her, and Mr. Peart, Leader of the House moved that she be suspended. Even after the speaker named her, and Mr. Peart, Leader of the House moved that she be suspended. Even after the speaker announced her suspension she continued to protest, and only left when the Serjeant-at-Arms escorted her out. The result of her action is suspension for five sitting days of Parliament. Photo shows Dame Irene Ward, 72, outside her Belgravia flat last night after she had been suspended from the Commons for five sitting days
