Jul. 10, 1967 - Army looks for Cannon balls used in 1642.: The Army were in Edgehill, Warwiekshire, yesterday, digging up the battlefield where Cavaliers and Roundheads fought a draw in 1642, in the hope of getting some of their cannon balls back. Yesterday's exercise was of academic interest - the academic most interested being Brigadier Peter Young, reader in military history at Sandhurst. He has been commissioned to write a book about the battle of Edgehill and would find it easier if he knew a little more about the artillery used in the Civil War. The trouble is there's not much of it about now. Brigadier Young was not discouraged. The next best thing he decided, was to look for what the guns fired. The size of the cannon balls would show the size of the guns. So he contacted the Army, who yesterday armed 225 Squadron of the Royal Engineers (Volunteers) with mine-detectors and marched them on to the field of battle. Sadly, they failed to unearth a single cannon ball. But they now have a magnificent collection of rusty metal from seventeeth-century gun-carriages.
