Mar. 17, 1967 - Computers are going into the front line of the British Army: There will be a new item of equipment in the British Army next year - battlefield computers. The Army have announced that it had ordered computers for use by the Royal Artillery and they have nicknamed it FACE (standing for Field Artillery Computer Equipments). In future soldiers will lead their heavy guns and then sit back while the computers work out the range, bearing and angle of the target, allow for the effects of weather, corrects the aim to suit the type of ammunition and campensats for gravity. FACE is really an Elliett 920B computer on wheels and in typical battlefield conditions it can travel at the rear of a battery of tanks, mounted in an armour-plated vehicle.
