Nov. 11, 1969 - Franco Blockade Strangles Rock's Market: While speculation grows about a Spanish change of policy towards Gibraltar, General Franco's blockade continues - and one of its visible effects is the near death-blow it has death to the Rock's only public market place. Once a thriving, colourful, bustling scene as meat, poultry and fish, only 20 of its 104 stalls are trading now, and business is but a trickle. A little fresh produce, expensive and inferior, comes from Morocco; but the main fare now consists of frozen foods from Britain, Denmark, New Zealand and Argentina
