Sep. 29, 1971 - GLC Leader Opens Fish Experimental Unit: Sir Desmond Plummer, Leader of the Greater London Council, today opened the GLC.s Fish Experimental Unit at Deephams Sewage Treatment Works, Edmonton. Sir Desmond placed the first fish into the unit. This unit will enable the study of the effluent as a food source for fish but more important will be an additional test of the purity of the effluent. It will also allow the GLC to test the build up of pesticides and mercury in living organisms, the fish as well as their food chain. The unit- very much a pilot experiment at the moment - should provide much needed information on water pollution and what can be done to improve matters. This information is needed now- not when water has become so scarce that there is a national crisis. Photo shows Sir Desmond Plummer seen placing the first fish - tench - into the new unit today
