Dec. 05, 1969 - December 5th, 1969 Another major Rembrandt portrait sold at Christie's today for 300, 000 Guineas An important portrait by Rembrandt, an old man, said to be his father, Harmen Gerritsz Van Rijn, was sold at Christie's, the London auctioneers, for 300, 000 gns. The half-length portrait was put up for sale by Sir Brian Mountain, Chariman of Eagle Star Insurance, and shows the sitter full face, wearing a black cap with an imposing single blue ostrich feather secured in it by a gold chain. This painting was picked up in a small auction room in Hove, Sussex, in May 1877 for a mere £100, eventually coming to Christie's in February 1938, when Sir Brian Mountain's father acquired it for 7, 000 guineas, a notable price at the time. At today's auction the Rembrandt portrait was bought by Edward Speelman, a Piccadilly, London, art dealer.
