Jan. 01, 1972 - 13 SHOT DEAD IN LONDONDERRY. Thirteen men were killed yesterday as Army paratroopers broke up a banned Civil Rights march in Londonderry, which turned into-riot on the edge of the Roman Catholic Bogside. It was the worst single incident of the entire Ulster crisis. Major General Robert Ford, Commander Land Forces Northern Ireland, rejected allegations that the troops had shot first or fired indiscriminately. The first shots came from terrorist gunmen, and the soldiers fired single, aimed shots in return. he insisted. Troops were bombarded with acid bombs, bottles, bricks and at least one canister of CS gas as they battled to control the mobs, while IRA gunmen sniped from behind the rioters.
