May 05, 1974 - Ulster Nearing a Standstill: The militant Protestants of the Ulster Workers Council, Organisers of the general strike in the province, refused to provide even skeleton essential services. They intensified the stoppage after troops took over oil and petrol storage depots and 21 filling stations. With two thirds of Ulster blacked out, production and distribution of food were already halted and public transport almost at a standstill.
