1976 - Briton Plunges to death on everest climb: A 39-year-old British Army captain has fallen to his death in a crevasse 22, 000 feet up the south face of Mount Everest. He is Terence David Thompson, who lived at Exmouth, and was a member of the 24-man British-Napalese Army joint expedition. Captain Thompson, father of two boys, aged 13 and 8, is the second Briton to die on Everest in less than a year. Last year photographer Mick Burke was killed during a successful British climb up the mountain's previously untackled South-West face.
