May 05, 1972 - First Woman Doctor To Achieve Air Rank In The Royal Air Force: Air Commodore Elspeth McKechnie, the first woman doctor to attain Air rank in the Royal Air Force, today took up her new rank and assumed command of the Central Medical Establishment, London. Prior to this she was the commanding officer of the RAF Hospital, Cosford, Staffordshire. Air Commodore Elspeth McKechnie, 54, was born and brought up in Manchester.
