Aug. 08, 1975 - Courts hamper war on crime says yard chief: Any assessment of value of jury trials should take into account threats to witnesses, dubious defence tatics, crooked lawyers and the need to protect criminals giving evidence for the crown, said Sir Robert Mark, Metropolitan Police commissioner, yesterday. Attacking the criminal justice system in general and academic research into jury trials in particular, he said some means had to be found to bring to public notice the sordid reality which can, and does, mar the criminal process in London'.
