1981 - Tory M.P. receives I.R.A. letter bomb.: Mr. Barry Porter, Conservative MP fir Bebington and Ellesmere Port, received a letter bomb from the IRA at the weekend but was suspicious and took it to Birkenhead police station. The bomb, in a brown padded envelope, had been forwarded to Mr. Porter's Birkenhead home from the House of Commons. It arrived on Saturday and his wife, who suspected the packet, left it from Mr. Porter to open. After carefully slitting the top of the envelope he could see wires and a battery. he immediately put it in his car and drove to the police.
