1956 - Moon Relays United States Navy messages between Hawaii and Washington D.C.: The United States Navys Communications Moon relay system, which utilities the Moon as a passive reflector for relay of radio signals, was first demonstrated to the public on January 28th. 1960. The System can transmit messaged between Hawaii and Washington D.C. The Moon relay project is the outgrowth of discoveries by the Naval research laboratory in Washington, where the feasibility of using moon reflections technique for communications was demonstrated in 1951. In 1956 the Navys bureau of ships awarded a research contract to development engineering corporation of Washington D.C. for a pilot system. The Washington and Pearl Harbour terminals use separate transmitter and receiver facilities each with dish-type antenna 84 feet in diameter.
