Feb. 29 A glimpse behind the bamboo curtain at the men who went East instead of West after the war in Korea.: When the fighting in Korea was over and the P.O.Ws were re-patriated, only 21 Americans and one Briton elected to go to Communist China. Twenty two out of the thousands of United Nation soldiers who had been subjected to constant Red propaganda, was a small number, but the decisions made by these men shook the Western world. They were given every chance to change their minds, but all Western argument failed and they disappeared voluntarily behind the Bamboo Curtain. Now the first pictures of these men taken since their arrival in the country of their choice have reached the West. They wore taken in Peking, where, it is said, they are going on sight seeing tours, playing games, shopping with money provided by the authorities, and relaxing in their quarters, while they study the situation in China before deciding upon their future careers. They have been provided with several made-to-measure suits each American type neckties and although many of their meals are Western Type, they are being encouraged to eat Chinese food, although none of them has yet mastered the use of chopsticks. Escorted through the streets of Peking, the departmental stores and the public parks like honoured guests, their appearance new stares from the Chinese, for the sight of a Western man in the streets of Peking these days, is rare indeed. Out on a shopping spree in Peking with money given them by the authorities, the Communist-minded ex-P.O.W's were stared at by the Chinese some of whom have probably never seen a Westerner before.
