Aug. 10, 1965 - The Saigon countryside is a panorama of dramatic vignettes: A rickety bus jammed with refugees fleeing a village (in this case Vung Tau) threatened by the Viet Cong, their belonging loaded atop the bus in baskets. Massed US armor rumbling along. The wreckage of a US personnel carrier blasted in an ambush. The ever present rice paddy farmers - many of them enemy guerillas by night. The thatch roof hamlets picturesque by day, but at night ominous, Henry Gill, Daily News photographer, took these pictures, all within 40 miles of the capital of South Vietnam
