Jul. 07, 1980 - Woman President for Iceland: Vigdis Finnbogadottir, director of the Reykjavik Theatre, has become Europe's first democratically-elected female head of state by winning Iceland's recent presidential election. She won 33.6% of the votes cast compared with 32.2% for her rival Gudlaugur Thorvaldsson. The president-elect, who is unmarried and has an adopted daughter, takes office on August 1st.
