1974 - Foreign Secretary Walter Scheel Aspirant of the FDP for the presidential election on May 15, 1974: On May 15, The Federal Assembly is deciding who will be the successor for the current President of the Federal Republic, Gustav Heinemann. Walter Scheel (picture) is the aspirant of the Liberal Party, and is supported by the Social Democrats, who disclaim a nomination of an own aspirant. Walter Scheel was born in Solingen on July 8, 1919 and having passed the banking business worked as manager for industries and unions after his military service from 1938-1945. In 1953 he was an independent business consultant. Walter Scheel who since 1946 belongs to the FPD and since 1968 is a Federal Chairman was from 1961 until 1966 Secretary for economic cooperation and since October 22, 1969 Foreign Secretary of the social-liberal coalition. His rival candidate is the vice-chairman Richard von Weizsacker of the CDU/CSU, whose nomination will be decided finally on May 6, 1974
