Aug. 07, 1956 - Hot a Christmas scene-But August Bank Holiday 1956 Freak Hail Storm Paralyses Town: Hail three feet deep-houses wrecked-roads blocked-that was Britain's most fantastic August Bank Holiday ever. Ice storms sweeping Southern England brought mid-winter scenes like this to Tunbridge Wells yesterday. The hailstones, flat and jagged, like peices of broken glass, froze into icepicks Then it rained, and the rain swept a long tons of hailstones in icy torrent, which brought more trouble floods. It took gangs of workmen with a mechanicl shovel four hours to clear a route forward bound holiday traffic from the Sussex coast.
