Aug. 07, 1956 - Not a Christmas Scene - but August Bank Holiday 1966 Freak Hailstorm Paralyses Town.: Hail three feet deep - houses wrecked - reads blocked - that was Britain's most fantastic August Bank Holiday over. Loe storms sweeping Southern England brought mid-winter scenes like this to Tumbridge wells yesterday. The hailstones, flat and jagged, like pieces of broken glass froze into ice packs'. Then it rained, sweeping along tons of hailstone in an icy torrent, which bought more trouble - floods. It took gangs of workmen with a mechanical shovel four hours to clear a route for homeward bound holiday traffic from the Suesex coast.
