Wedding of Princess Alexandra, artist William Carey
Feb. 29 This Artist has just finished painting the Royal Wedding - of Princess Alexandra of Kent. A painting of the wedding of HRH Princess Alexandra of Kent and the Hon Angus Ogilvy at Westminster Abbey by artist William Carey has recently been finalised. Originally done in watercolours, Mr Carey submitted it to the couple who gave their permission for him to paint a giant oil work measuring 6 feet by 8 feet. But as the months went by Mr. Carey's sight began to fail and over a period of 2 1/2 years he became completely blind. Eventually, after a series of operations at the Bristol Eye Hospital, William Carey could see again, and was allowed to continue his painting, but not in artificial light. His canvas had been safely kept in his studio at the Abbey and later transferred to his studio at Chiswick where he has now put the finishing touches to it, ready for acceptance. William Carey was born in 1897 at Chorlton Hawthorn, near Wincanton. He served in World War I in the Artists Rifles and the Gloucestershire Regiment. He was at one time commissioned to model and design the Gloucester War Memorial
