Werner Egk, German composer and conductor, 80th birthday

May 05, 1981 - 80th Birthday Of Prof. Werner EGK: On May 17th. 1981 Prof. Werner EGK (our picture), son of a country teacher from Donauworth, West Germany, will celebrate his 80th. birthday. After leaving the classical grammar school in Augsburg, he started a musical study in the city academy of music which he continued at the university of Munich. At the same time, among others he received private lessons from Carl Orff. - Most of all Egk concentrated upon the creativeness of operas and ballet. He's one of the few, still living West German composers whose works are internationally known. His first opera was The Magic Violin (1935); this composition after a fairytale was put on stage about hundred times, 1936, together with Orff, he was commissioned to write the music for an Olympic festival by the NOC - because of that he was awarded with the gold medal for orchestral music. In 1938 his opera Peer Gynt, and 1940 his ballet Joan von Zarissa were played for the first time. Then compositions like Columbus'. The Chinese Nightingale, Irish Legend, The Reviser, Engagement in San Domingo, the ballet Abraxas followed. From 1952-70 Werner Egk has been a member of the Bavarian State Opera and there he managed each performance of his operas and ballets being in the repertoire. The name Werner Egk is mainly bound up with questions of copyright in music. For many years he has been the chairman of the Gema's supervisory board and from 1976-78, as the first German man, he has also been confident of the CISAG, the world organisation of the association of copyright.
