Western soldiers go to China after Korean War

Mar. 22, A glimpse behind the Bamboo curtain at the few men who went East instead of West after the war in Korea: When the fighting in Korea was over and the POWs were repatriated only 21 Americans and one Briton elected to go to Communist China. Twenty two out of the thousand of united Nation soldiers who had been subjected to constant Red propaganda, was a small number but the decisions made by these men shook the Western world. They were given every chance to change their minds, but all Western argument failed and they disappeared voluntarily behind the Bamboo Curtain. Now the first pictures of these men taken since their arrival in the country of their choice have reached the West. They were taken in Peking, where, it is said, they are going on sightseeing tours, playing games, shopping with money provided by the authorities, and relaxing in their quarters while they study the situation in China before deciding upon their future careers. They have been provided with several made to measure suits each, American type neckties and although many of their meals are Western type, they are being encouraged to eat Chinese food, although none of them has yet mastered the use of chopsticks. Escorted through the streets of Peking, the department stores and the public parks like honoured guests, their appearance drew stares from the Chinese, for the sight of a Western man in the streets of Peking these days, is rare indeed. Photo shows the ex prisoners who elected to go East instead of West are still subject to curious stares by the Chinese as they go shopping in Peking, especially the black ex GIs Sgt Larance V Sullivan of Omaha, Neb (left) and Pfc Clarance C Adams of Memphis, Tenn
