Wilhelm Fechner, engineer, with Superwal model
Jun. 16, 1954 - Engineer Wilhelm Fechner with his half-ship, half-plane creation, which he calls the Superwal. He came up with the idea shortly before the beginning of World War 2 and began design and construction on it shortly thereafter. This model is a 1:50 scale. The actual ship itself would weigh 11, 200 tons, be 157.5 meters long, have a width of 44 meters and a height of 33 meters. It could reach a speed of 100 knots and could carry 1, 500 people. It could get from Hamburg to New York in under 40 hours. The Bonn transportation ministry would not finance the creation though they were very interested in it
