Winston Churchill wins humanitarian award
Jul. 06, 1956 - Sir Winston Churchill Wins Heart Award. Life-Long Devotion To Liberty': Sir Winston Churchill yesterday received the solid gold hear-shaped Humanitarian award presented to him by the Variety Clubs International In recognition of his lifelong vigil in safe-guarding Democracy, and his zealous dedication to the furtherance of world peace'. Sir Winston won the award for his work in 1954, when as Britain's Prime Minister - he was selected for the honour following a secret poll undertaken by the editors of more than 100 major newspapers and magazines throughout the world. The dedication and presentation was delayed owing to Sir Winston's frequent absences abroad. He is the second Briton to win the award - the first being Sir Alexander Fleming who was honoured in 1944 for the discovery of penicillin, an outstanding contribution to the world of medicine'. The Variety Club's International was formed in 1928 since when it has donated ?15, 000 to young peoples causes.
