Woman with inflatable lifesaving device, Crystal Palace

Mar. 03, 1966 - The life saver ball. A ball - not for playing beach games, but for saving lives, was yesterday demonstrated at London's Crystal Palace swimming bath. The ball, designed by an American firm, is a compact lifebelt which can be thrown a considerable distance to anybody drowning. Helping to demonstrate it was Carol Raven, 19. She plunged into the deep end and pretended to be drowning. Her rescuer pulled the ripcord on the ball and hurled it toward her. As the ball hit the water a built-in gas cartridge inflated it into a 21 inch lifebelt. Carol placed it over her head and was saved.
