Woman looking at display of frames and crosses

Feb. 26 The Cedars of the Lebanon: The cedars of Mount Lebanon are very, very old. The Phoenicians build all the ships of cedar-wood with which they were conquering the countries. Under King Solomon their high stems were used to build the temple. And the cedars found their way to all peoples of the Mediterranean Sea. And the dry and strong cedar-wood was sent also to Asia in the hilly country of the Persians and also back to China. The stem were grown during centuries and after centuries they covered nearly the Lebanon in its whole extension. But then it only took a half millenium to extirpate them. And to-day there are only three places in the country left, high up in the mountains, where there still exist about 100 trees. They are 3000 to 4000 years old, but they are still living and still grow some millimeters in every year and as in early times also now the wood is aromatically smelling. To-day the old trees are under the protection of the state in order to have still the last of them. They are also trying to plant new trees but it will take many, many years until they are as high as a small fir. In the meantime the old trees have become an object of interest. 40 to 50 meters high they are rising in the hot summer-air, not touched by the heat of the season. But during the winter snow-storms are raging about their tops and skiing is done there by many people. Others who are just married are resting in their shadow and Americans are taking pictures when passing by. Cars are bringing noisefull companies but it is as if their majesty would just swallow all this noise and ado- They are having their rest like dryads, not moved in their age and not touched by all the business with keepsake around them
