Women Demand Release of Husbands. Wives of political
Jul. 07, 1968 - Women Demand Release of Husbands. Wives of political detainees in Calcutta, supported by several women's organisations in the city, demonstrated last week demanding immediate release of their husbands from jail. They said detention of people in jail without letting them face trial was violation of democratic principles. In many families the only earning member has been detained as a political prisoner. As a result many wives and their children have reached semi-starvation stage. The situation has further been aggravated because the Government has stopped the family allowance of political prisoners'. The women alleged that if Mr. Indira Gandhi, the country's Prime Minister, were true to her claims that India was a democratic country she would either have freed the detainees or allowed them face trial in a court of law.
