Wood Green School visit Goodwin Sands by hovercraft
1969 - Wood Green School visits the Goodwin sands by Hovercraft: More than 200 schoolchildren from Wood Green School, North London, who undertake unusual projects today went to the Goodwin Sands by hovercraft. On their way to the Goodwin Sands, off Deal, the schoolchildren aged 11-18 travelled by the Princess Margaret the 165 ton 75 m.p.h. hovercraft used by British Rail's Sea speed company to launch the world's first passenger and car-carrying hovercraft services across the Channel last year. It was the first trip to the Goodwin Sands by the Princess Margaret and the hovercraft took the school to the Sands between running scheduled flights from Dover to Boulogne and back. When the children landed on the sands they claimed them by planting a school flag in the sand, and conducted a geographical survey of the Sands. Other firsts for Wood Green School include chartering an airliner, flying to Jersey for an afternoon swim and conducting an aerial survey of Wood Green by helicopter.
