WRAF pilot officer who has flown at 1000 mph

Feb. 02, 1968 - W.R.A.F OFFICER BECOMES THE 1, 000TH. TEN-TONNER'. Pilot Officer Vivienne Whyer, aged 19, an Air Traffic Control Officer with the Women's Royal Air Force, today became the 1000th. member of the R.A.F's 1000 M.P.H. Club - an exclusive body for which only people who have flown an aeroplane at 1, 000 m.p.h. are eligible. Her home is at Wooburn Town, High Wycombe, Bucks. She made her flight in a 1, 500 m.p.h. Lighting from R.A.F. Coltishall, Norfolk, flown by Group Captain Mike Hobson Coltishall's Station Commander. During the flight Vivienne handled the controls - qualifying her to be presented with the much coveted Ten Ton tie and illuminated scroll which signifies membership of the club. Viviene thus joins such famous names as the Shah of Persia, King Hussein of Jordan, and Mr. Peter Twiss (former world air speed record holder). Vivienne will be the ninth member of the club - the others being six W.R.A.F. officers, a forker Air Transport Auxilliary pilot and a Swiss woman journalist.
